Making Mindful Choices In Steakhouses

by Gloria Gardner

The word diet might not come to mind when thinking about frequenting steakhouses NYC. But you need not throw your diet away when making the choice to visit a traditional steakhouse. You have a certain amount of control when ordering at a restaurant such as this. There are healthful choices on the menu, one need only find them.

There are many ways to make healthier choices when visiting a steakhouse. One just needs to plan ahead of time and apply some common sense when ordering. It is always a good idea to get a copy of the menu, possibly from the Internet, in order to plot your meal ahead of time.

Do not be fooled when it comes to the salad portion of your dinner. Not all salads are created equal. Some, in fact, are more fat and calorie laden than most entrees. Some salads, namely Caesar, have more calories than an average hamburger.

There are steps that the diner can take to mitigate fattening salads. One of these is to order dressing on the side and dip your fork into the dressing before picking up your salad with the fork. This will give you the same taste, but fewer calories than if you had dumped dressing all over the top of your dish.

Leaner cuts of meat are your friends. Again, not all meat is created equal. Steer clear of fattier cuts such as Delmonicos and ribeyes. Also stay away from starches that come with your entree. Instead, ask your server if you can have grilled mushrooms or onions with your steak. It is a perfect compliment to your meat.

When you come to the final course in Steakhouses NYC, do not be afraid to order. Share your dessert, or order a child sized portion that will give you a taste of the dessert that appeals to you. Very few people are comfortable with finishing a full-sized dessert anyway. This way, you will not be wasting money, food or calories.
