When storing your herbs and spices, they should be kept in a cool, dark spot. Light, heat and humidity will cause their flavor to weaken. Generally, ground spices and herbs keep most of their flavor for a year. Whole spices might retain their flavors for three to five years. If stored correctly, they will remain fresher longer.

Garlic is just one of many tasty ingredients whose flavor has a downside: It transfers to your hands. Rub your hands thoroughly on the interior of a stainless steel sink after working with garlic or other odoriferous cooking ingredients. This will cleanse your hands and prevent the smells from transferring to the food you handle next.

Whenever you are cooking and you feel the need to add more oil, the best way to add oil is to add it through the side of the pan. By doing this, the oil will be heated when it gets to the ingredient that is being cooked. This is a good tip to remember.

Having sharp knives when you are cooking is very important. Dull knives are not only difficult to cut things with, but they are also very dangerous to use. It is possible to cook healthy without abandoning all of the rich, creamy dressings that can contribute so much flavor. One method is to use Greek-style yogurt as a replacement for mayonnaise. Half of the mayonnaise called for in the recipe should be replaced with the yogurt. This will give the same great taste while cutting down on the unhealthy effects of the mayo.
